Heat exchangers save maintenance

Hässleholm Miljö AB installed two SWEP B649 brazed plate heat exchangers in its incineration plant during the spring and summer of 2013. These replaced a 10 MW gasketed heat exchanger that had been in operation since 2002. The benefits are reduced costs and increased reliability.

Hässleholm Miljö AB is a commercial company wholly owned by Hässleholm Municipality, which is located in southern Sweden. The company processes and recycles domestic and industrial waste, and produces and supplies district heating. The company's district heating operation is planned on the basis of long-term financial projections and its contribution to environmental benefits. As far as possible, production is based on local forms of energy and waste energy sources.

Hässleholm Miljö ABThe decision to invest in brazed plate heat exchangers in its incineration plant also contributes to financial and environmental savings. According to Operations Manager Gustav Marcus, there are several benefits in addition to high energy efficiency: "We get a more flexible solution that makes it easy to expand capacity as needed. We reduce our maintenance costs and downtime because the brazed technology means there are no gaskets to be replaced. At the same time, we get rid of heat exchangers that leak at start-up and when the temperature varies."

For several years, SWEP has been seeing increasing demand for high-capacity brazed plate heat exchangers for both heating and cooling.

"This installation requires a capacity of 10 MW, something that brazed plate heat exchanges have been unable to provide until now," says Bengt Nilsson, salesperson at SWEP. "Our model B649 makes us the only supplier on the market currently able to offer the benefits of brazed technology for installations of this size, too. Thanks to our modular concept, the capacity can also be easily expanded if the need arises."
